What an inverter/charger actually does

An inverter/charger is two devices in one enclosure. The inverter turns DC battery power into clean 120V AC so you can run household appliances underway or at anchor. The charger works in reverse: when you plug into shore power or start the generator, it charges your battery bank and simultaneously powers your AC loads. A built-in transfer switch automatically passes shore/generator power straight through to your AC panel when it is available, and seamlessly switches back to inverter power when it is not — fast enough that most electronics never notice the gap.

The Victron MultiPlus line adds PowerControl and PowerAssist: it caps how much shore-power current it draws so you never trip a dock breaker, and it can blend battery power with shore power to run loads larger than the dock pedestal alone could support. That combination is what makes a single MultiPlus the heart of most modern marine electrical systems.

MultiPlus vs. MultiPlus-II vs. Quattro — which do you need?

  • MultiPlus — the classic, proven inverter/charger with one AC input and one AC output. A great choice for a straightforward shore-power-only boat.
  • MultiPlus-II — our default recommendation for most refits. It adds an external current-transformer input for advanced PowerAssist and is ready for the latest Victron GX integration. The 2x 120V models can also feed a split-phase (120/240V) panel.
  • Quattro / Quattro-II — step up to a Quattro when you have two AC sources to manage, such as shore power and a generator. The Quattro has two AC inputs with an automatic priority transfer switch, so it picks whichever source is live without any manual switching.

Step 1 — Match the unit to your battery voltage

The first number in the model name is the battery bank voltage: 12, 24, or 48. The inverter/charger must match your house bank. Higher-voltage banks (24V or 48V) move the same power at lower current, which means smaller cables and less voltage drop — worth considering on larger systems. Battery chemistry matters too: MultiPlus units have preset and fully custom charge profiles for flooded, AGM, gel, and lithium (LiFePO₄) banks, set in the VictronConnect app, and they integrate with a Victron BMS so charging stops cleanly on a BMS signal.

Step 2 — Size the inverter output and charger amps

Every model name carries the two numbers that matter most, e.g. 12/3000. The first is battery voltage; the second is the inverter's VA rating (apparent power). A rough real-world rule is that continuous output in watts is about 80% of the VA figure — so a 3000VA MultiPlus delivers roughly 2400W continuous, with a short surge headroom above that for motor startups.

  • Inverter size (the VA number): Add up the AC loads you realistically run at the same time. A coffee maker (~1000W) plus a microwave (~1200W) already wants a 3000VA unit. If you only run a few outlets, a laptop, and LED lighting, a 2000VA MultiPlus is plenty. When in doubt, size up — an oversized inverter simply loafs along and runs cooler.
  • Charger amps (the third number, e.g. 120-50): The first figure is the battery-charge current in amps, the second is the transfer-switch rating. Size the charger so your bank recharges in a sensible window: a good starting point is roughly 20–50% of your bank's amp-hour capacity for lithium, less for lead-acid. A 400Ah lithium bank pairs well with the 120A charger in a 12/3000, for example.

Step 3 — Shore power, transfer switch, and split-phase

  • Transfer-switch rating: Most marine MultiPlus models use a 50A transfer switch, which comfortably passes typical 30A and 50A shore-power feeds straight through to your panel.
  • PowerControl: Set the maximum shore-current limit in VictronConnect to match the pedestal you're plugged into (e.g. 30A) and the unit will never overload the dock breaker — it throttles charging first, then draws from the batteries if needed.
  • 120V vs. 2x 120V: A standard model outputs a single 120V leg. The 2x 120V MultiPlus-II and Quattro-II models can supply a split-phase 120/240V panel, which matters on larger yachts with 240V equipment.

Step 4 — Wiring, fusing, and installation

  • DC fusing: Fit a correctly rated fuse (typically a Class-T or MEGA fuse for lithium systems) on the positive battery cable as close to the bank as practical, sized to the unit's maximum DC current and ABYC practice. We can spec the exact fuse and holder for your model.
  • DC cable: Inverter/chargers pull very high DC current — a 12/3000 can draw well over 250A at full inverter load — so battery cable must be sized generously for that current and the run length to keep voltage drop low.
  • AC wiring: Input and output must be wired to ABYC standards with proper breakers and, where required, appropriate grounding/neutral bonding relay behavior configured in the unit.
  • Marine environment: Mount in a dry, ventilated space away from spray and engine heat, with clearance for airflow. These units derate if they can't shed heat.
