Garmin Standalone Fishfinders FAQ

Who should choose a standalone fishfinder?

It fits small boats, kayaks, and ice fishing, or a boat that already has a plotter and wants a dedicated sonar screen. If you also want charts on the same screen, look at Garmin fishfinder combos instead.

How do I power a fishfinder on a kayak or small boat?

It runs on 12 volts, so you need a small battery sized for how long you fish. Put a fuse in the positive lead close to the battery and use marine-grade wire and connectors, since salt air corrodes cheap terminals quickly.

Where does the transducer go?

On most small boats it mounts on the transom where water flows smoothly, clear of strakes, rivets, and prop wash. Kayaks often use a scupper or in-hull mount. Browse Garmin transducers for mounting options.
