Is my existing cord good enough to re-terminate?

Only if it's in good shape. If the jacket is cracked, stiff, or cut, or the conductors near the old plug are discolored from heat, replace the whole cord instead. A new SmartPlug cordset is the cleaner option in that case.

Do the inlet and connector have to match?

Yes. A 30A inlet takes a 30A SmartPlug connector and a 50A inlet takes a 50A connector. Buying them as a kit makes sure you get a matched pair.

Should I install the kit myself?
