Victron Fuses & Distribution FAQ

How do I choose the right fuse size?

A fuse protects the wire, not the device. Size it at or below the ampacity of the smallest wire it protects, and above the normal running current of the load so it doesn't blow in normal use. If the wire is undersized for the load, the fix is bigger wire, not a bigger fuse. Loads like inverters need special attention because of their high DC current.

Where do fuses need to be installed?

ABYC E-11 calls for overcurrent protection close to the battery, generally within 7 inches of the battery connection, with limited exceptions for longer runs when the cable is protected by a sheath or enclosure. The goal is to protect as much of the cable as possible, since an unprotected cable can't be shut off if it shorts.

Does a lithium bank need a different main fuse?

Lithium batteries can deliver very high current into a short circuit. The main battery fuse needs an interrupt rating high enough to safely break that fault current, which is why Class T fuses are commonly used as the main fuse on lithium banks. See our lithium battery systems page for more on protecting a lithium install.
