Xantrex Battery Chargers FAQ

How many charger banks do I need?

Plan on one output for each battery bank you want charged independently, such as house, start, and thruster. A multi-bank charger charges each bank separately without tying them together, so a weak bank doesn't drag down the others.

What does a battery temperature sensor do?

The sensor lets the charger adjust its charge voltage to the actual battery temperature. That helps prevent overcharging in a hot engine room and undercharging in cold weather. It mounts on the battery, so the charger is reacting to the bank itself rather than the air around the charger.

Where should a battery charger be mounted?

Pick a dry, ventilated spot close enough to the batteries to keep the DC leads short, but not directly above them. Each output lead needs a fuse near the battery, sized to the wire. See fuse blocks & fuses for that part of the install.
