Victron Battery Monitors FAQ
Why can't I just use battery voltage to tell how charged my batteries are?
Voltage changes with load, charging, and temperature, so it's a rough guide at best. On lithium it's nearly useless, because the voltage stays almost flat across most of the charge range. A shunt-based monitor counts the amps going in and out, which gives a real state-of-charge reading. See our lithium battery systems page for more on why this matters.
What's the difference between a BMV and a SmartShunt?
Both measure current through a shunt (a precision resistor in the battery negative). The BMV models come with a panel-mount display. The SmartShunt has no display; you read it on your phone over Bluetooth or on a GX device such as the Cerbo GX in our battery management collection.
Where does the shunt get installed?
The shunt goes in the main negative cable, between the battery bank's negative terminal and everything else. Every load and charging source has to connect on the system side of the shunt. Anything wired straight to the battery negative won't be counted, and the readings will drift. A busbar or Lynx distributor makes that layout cleaner.
