Mastervolt Inverter/Chargers FAQ
Does an inverter/charger replace a separate inverter and charger?
Yes. One unit charges the batteries when shore power or a generator is available, and inverts battery power to AC when it isn't, switching between the two automatically. If you only need one of those jobs, a standalone Mastervolt inverter or Mastervolt charger may be the simpler choice.
How much battery capacity does an inverter/charger need behind it?
Inverting draws a lot of DC current. On a 12V system, every 1,000 watts of AC load pulls roughly 85–100 amps from the batteries. Size the bank for the loads you plan to run and for how long, and remember lead-acid banks shouldn't be routinely drawn down as deeply as lithium. Our lithium battery systems page covers bank sizing.
Can I install an inverter/charger myself?
This job ties into both your high-current DC system and your boat's AC panel, and it has to be done to ABYC E-11 so the inverter can never back-feed the shore inlet. Most owners are better off having it installed professionally. See our inverter/charger installation page or contact us to plan the work.
