Raymarine AIS FAQ

Should I get an AIS receiver or a Class B transceiver?

A receiver only shows you other AIS-equipped vessels. A Class B transceiver does that and also broadcasts your own position, course, and speed, so commercial traffic can see you. If you cross shipping lanes or run at night, the transceiver is worth it. Either one displays targets on your Axiom chartplotter.

Do I need an MMSI number?

Yes, for a transceiver. It must be programmed with your vessel's MMSI before it will transmit. US boats that stay in domestic waters can get an MMSI through organizations such as BoatUS; boats heading to foreign ports need an FCC ship station license.

Can AIS share my VHF antenna?

It can, through an antenna splitter. Some transceivers have a splitter built in and others need a separate one or a dedicated AIS antenna, so check the specs of the unit you choose. A transceiver also needs a GPS source, so plan that antenna location too.
