Mastervolt Battery Chargers FAQ
What size charger does my boat need?
For lead-acid banks (flooded, AGM, or gel), a charger rated around 10–20% of the bank's amp-hour capacity is a common starting point. Lithium banks can usually take more, up to the battery maker's maximum charge rate. Add headroom for loads like refrigeration that run while you're plugged in. See lithium battery systems if you're switching chemistry.
Can I reuse my old wiring when replacing a charger?
Sometimes. Check that the existing DC cables and fuses are sized for the new charger's output, and that the AC supply circuit matches its input. Mounting footprints often differ between models, so plan for new mounting holes. If the new charger has more output current than the old one, the cables and fuses may need to be upgraded.
Do I need a battery temperature sensor?
It's strongly recommended. Battery charge voltage should change with temperature, and a sensor on the battery lets the charger adjust. That matters most when batteries sit in a hot engine room, where charging at a fixed voltage can overcharge them. If you're upgrading the whole system, also look at Mastervolt inverter/chargers.
