Simrad Radar FAQ

What does solid-state mean for a radar?

A solid-state radar has no magnetron, the tube older radars use to generate their signal. That means much lower transmitted power, no long warm-up before you can use it, and no magnetron to wear out and replace.

Will a Halo radar work with my current chartplotter?

Radar is generally brand-specific. A Halo needs a compatible Simrad display (or another display from the same Navico family) and will not run on a Garmin or Raymarine plotter. See our Simrad chartplotters if you need a display to pair with it.

Where should the radar be mounted?

High enough to see over the boat's own structure with a clear view all the way around, and above crew head height. Hardtops, arches, and mast brackets are the usual spots. See our electronic navigation installation page for how we plan mounting and cable runs.
