How do I size an inverter/charger for my boat?
Add up the wattage of the AC loads you expect to run at the same time, then allow extra for startup surge from motors and compressors. Remember the battery bank has to supply that power: on a 12V system, every 1,000 watts of AC load pulls roughly 85–100 amps of DC. That current drives cable size, fusing, and how big a bank you need. What does the built-in transfer switch do?
When shore power or a generator is connected, the unit passes that AC through to your boat's loads and charges the batteries. When that source drops out, it switches over to inverting from the batteries. The AC side still has to be wired so the inverter can never back-feed the shore inlet and so neutral and ground are handled per ABYC standards. Can I install an inverter/charger myself?
It's one of the few jobs that touches both high-current DC and 120V/240V AC, which is why it's safety-critical. Cable sizing, fusing, grounding, and AC panel integration all have to meet ABYC E-11.
