Garmin Chartplotters FAQ
Should I choose GPSMAP or ECHOMAP?
ECHOMAP is the more compact, lower-cost line and suits smaller boats with a simple setup. GPSMAP is the higher-end line with more networking options for adding radar, sonar modules, and extra displays. If you expect to grow the system, start with GPSMAP.
If I buy a non-sonar plotter, can I add sonar later?
On networkable models, yes. A separate Garmin sonar module connects to the plotter over the Garmin network and adds sonar without replacing the display.
Which charts should I use?
Garmin plotters run Garmin BlueChart and Navionics cartography. Navionics Vision+ adds features such as satellite imagery on top of the standard charts. Check each listing to see whether charts come preloaded or need to be bought separately.
