Mastervolt Battery Management FAQ
What does a MasterShunt do?
A MasterShunt is a battery monitor. It measures the current flowing in and out of the battery bank through a shunt (a precision resistor in the negative cable) and uses that to calculate state of charge. That's far more accurate than judging charge by voltage, especially on lithium. All loads and charging sources must connect on the system side of the shunt for the readings to be right.
Why does a lithium bank need battery management?
Lithium cells must be kept within safe voltage and temperature limits. The battery management system watches the cells and has to be able to stop charging or shut off loads when a limit is reached, so chargers and load disconnects need to be wired and configured to respond to it. Our lithium battery systems page explains how a complete lithium install fits together.
My Mastervolt system is showing errors. What should I check first?
Start with the basics: battery voltage, tight and clean DC connections, and blown fuses. Network faults are often caused by a damaged or unplugged MasterBus cable or a missing terminator at the end of the network. If the problem isn't obvious, contact us to schedule diagnostics on board.
