What length cord should I get?
Pick the length that reaches the pedestal at your usual slip with slack for tide and boat movement. Avoid joining cords together; every extra connection is another place for heat to build. A second, longer cord is useful if you travel.
When should a shore power cord be replaced?
Replace it if the jacket is cracked or cut, or if either end is discolored, melted, or corroded. Those signs mean heat or water damage that can spread to the inlet. Shop inlets if the boat end looks the same.
Can I use a household extension cord on my boat?
Not for shore power. A boat's 30A or 50A system needs a marine shore power cordset with locking ends rated for that current. The 15A cords here are for on-board charger inlets and light-duty dockside use.
