Simrad Autopilots FAQ

What parts make up a complete autopilot system?

The controller at the helm is only one piece. A full system also needs a course computer, a drive unit or pump that moves the rudder, a heading sensor, and usually a rudder feedback unit. Heading sensors are in our Simrad instruments collection.

How is the drive sized?

The drive has to match your steering type, whether that is hydraulic, cable, or mechanical linkage, and the boat's size and displacement. On hydraulic systems the pump is matched to the steering cylinder. An undersized drive will struggle to hold course in a following sea.

Can the autopilot follow routes from my chartplotter?

Yes. When it shares a network with an NSO or NSS Simrad chartplotter, the autopilot can steer to waypoints and follow routes you build on the display.
