Simrad Instruments FAQ

What is an NMEA 2000 backbone?

It is the main trunk cable that carries data between your electronics. It has a terminator at each end, takes power at one point, and each device connects with a tee and a short drop cable. See our NMEA 2000 cables and connectors for backbone parts.

Do I need a heading sensor?

If you have an autopilot, radar overlay on the chart, or want true wind direction, yes. GPS alone gives course over ground, not which way the bow is pointing. A heading sensor is required for Simrad autopilots.
