How do I know when gaskets need replacing?

Inspect them when you inspect the cord, at least once a season. Replace any gasket that's cracked, flattened, hardened, or no longer seals snugly. Water inside the connection leads to corrosion, and corrosion leads to heat.

Can a parts kit fix a burned inlet or connector?

No. Heat damage means the part should be replaced, along with any damaged wire ends behind it. Replace the unit with a new SmartPlug inlet or connector and find the loose or corroded connection that caused it.
