Egis Circuit Breakers FAQ
How do I pick the amp rating for a breaker?
Size the breaker to protect the wire, not the device it feeds. The rating comes from the wire gauge, the insulation temperature rating, and how the wire is bundled, so check the conductor first. If you're upgrading wire at the same time, our Ancor battery cable collection covers the common marine gauges.
Should I use a surface-mount or panel-mount breaker?
Panel-mount breakers go in a distribution panel and feed branch circuits like lights and pumps. Surface-mount breakers bolt to a bulkhead near the power source and usually protect heavier feeds such as a windlass, thruster, or a sub-panel. Many boats use both.
What does a Type 3 breaker mean?
A Type 3 breaker is manual-reset: once it trips, it stays off until someone resets it by hand. That's what you want on a boat, because a fault won't keep cycling power on and off without anyone noticing. If a breaker keeps tripping, find the cause before resetting it again.
