Why use a DC-DC charger instead of wiring the alternator straight to a lithium bank?

Lithium batteries will accept as much current as an alternator can make, which can overheat a standard alternator. A DC-DC charger limits that current and applies a proper charge profile for the house bank, while keeping the starting battery separate. What's the difference between isolated and non-isolated converters?

In a non-isolated converter, the input and output share a common negative. An isolated converter has no electrical connection between input and output, which is useful when two systems need to keep their grounds separate or when you want to keep electrical noise from crossing over. For most single-negative boat systems, non-isolated works; check your system design before choosing.
