Victron Shore Power FAQ

What does an isolation transformer do?

It transfers shore power to the boat magnetically, so there's no direct wire connection between the dock's electrical system and your boat's. That breaks the path through the shore grounding wire that lets galvanic current flow between your boat and nearby boats, which is a common cause of underwater metal corrosion. Our shore power installation page explains the rest of a safe shore power setup.

Isolation transformer or galvanic isolator?

A galvanic isolator sits in the boat's AC grounding wire and blocks the low DC voltages that drive galvanic corrosion, while still passing fault current. It's smaller and less expensive. An isolation transformer provides more complete separation from shore power but is larger and heavier. Which one fits depends on your boat, your marina, and how much corrosion trouble you're seeing.

Can I install shore power equipment myself?

Shore power is 120V or 240V AC coming from the dock, and mistakes can create shock hazards in the water around the boat. ABYC E-11 covers grounding, overcurrent protection, and the equipment leakage protection now required on the main shore feed. We recommend having a qualified marine electrician do this work; contact us to have MES handle it.
