Xantrex Inverters FAQ

Do I need a true sine wave inverter?

For most boats, yes. True sine wave output runs everything the way shore power does. Modified sine wave can make motors run hot or buzz, and some chargers and electronics won't work properly on it.

How big an inverter do I need?

Add up the watts of everything you'll run at the same time and leave margin for startup surges from motors and compressors. Then check the DC side: at 12V, a rough rule is watts divided by 10 for battery amps, so a large inverter needs a battery bank and cables that can deliver that current.

What does the DC side of an inverter install need?

Short, heavy cables, a fuse at the battery (ABYC generally calls for it within 7 inches), and a ventilated mounting spot. The AC output also has to be wired so it can never backfeed shore power. See fuse blocks & fuses for the battery fuse, or call (410) 263-0807 and we'll install it throughout Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay.
