Victron Inverters FAQ
Do I need an inverter or an inverter/charger?
A standalone inverter only turns battery DC into AC. It doesn't charge the batteries or switch between shore power and battery power. That's fine if you already have a separate charger and just need to run a few outlets or one appliance. If you want one box that charges and handles the switchover automatically, look at Victron inverter/chargers.
Should I choose a 12V, 24V, or 48V inverter?
The inverter's input voltage has to match your battery bank. For the same AC output, a higher-voltage system draws less DC current, so cables can be smaller and losses are lower. That's why larger inverters are often paired with 24V or 48V banks.
What size cable and fuse does an inverter need?
It depends on the inverter's maximum DC current and the length of the cable run, out to the battery and back. Cables are sized for both ampacity (how much current the wire can safely carry) and voltage drop, and the fuse goes close to the battery as ABYC requires.
