Garmin Radars FAQ
Should I choose a solid-state Fantom or a magnetron xHD3?
Solid-state radars like the Fantom transmit at much lower power, are ready to use without a long warm-up, and have no magnetron to wear out. They also support Doppler features. Magnetron radars like the xHD3 are a proven, traditional design.
What does MotionScope do?
MotionScope uses Doppler processing to color-code targets moving toward or away from you. Approaching boats stand out from land and stationary clutter, which helps in busy channels and in fog.
How does the radar connect to my plotter?
Garmin radars connect to compatible Garmin chartplotters over the Garmin marine network, not to other brands' displays. See Garmin marine network cables and switches if you are adding radar to an existing system.
