SmartPlug — A Better Shore Power Connection

The shore power inlet is one of the most common places for heat damage on a boat. Traditional twist-lock plugs make contact through small, curved blades, and when those contacts loosen or corrode under a high-amperage load, they heat up. SmartPlug replaces that connection with straight blades that have far more contact area, a multi-point locking system, and weatherproof seals.

Why SmartPlug

  • More contact area. Straight electrical blades with up to 20 times the contact area of a twist-type plug, for better conductivity under heavy load.
  • Locks without twisting. Side clips lock the plug into the inlet and take strain off the pins when the cord moves. The keyed shape only goes in one way.
  • Sealed against weather. Weatherproof seals and a locking lid help keep water out of the connection.
  • Easy retrofit. The inlet mounting flange matches the standard twist-type 4-hole pattern, so it usually drops into the existing cutout.

Shore Power Upgrades & Installation

Swapping an inlet looks simple, but a scorched inlet is often a sign of a bigger problem: undersized or corroded wiring behind the inlet, a tired cordset, or a loose connection at the main breaker. We inspect the whole shore power path when we install SmartPlug. Contact us to schedule a shore power inspection or SmartPlug installation.

SmartPlug FAQ

Will a SmartPlug inlet fit my existing cutout?

Usually. The SmartPlug inlet flange matches the standard 4-hole pattern of twist-type inlets, so most swaps reuse the existing hole. Check your current inlet's size and amperage before ordering. Shop inlets.

Can I plug my old twist-lock cord into a SmartPlug inlet?

No. A SmartPlug inlet takes a SmartPlug connector on the boat end of the cord. That's why most people buy an inlet and connector kit, or a complete cordset. The dock end of the cord stays standard.

My inlet is scorched. Can I just replace it?

Replace it, but find out why it burned. Heat damage often traces back to a corroded cord end, loose terminals, or undersized wiring between the inlet and the main breaker. If the wiring behind the inlet is discolored or brittle, it needs to be replaced too.

30A or 50A?

Match the inlet to your boat's existing shore power service. Changing amperage means changing the wiring, the main breaker, and the cordset, not just the inlet. Call (410) 263-0807 or contact us to schedule a SmartPlug install in Annapolis.
