B&G Autopilots FAQ
What kind of drive unit does my sailboat need?
It depends on the steering system and the boat's displacement. Wheel-mounted drives are simpler to fit, while below-deck drives that connect directly to the rudder quadrant or tiller arm are stronger and the usual choice for offshore work. Hydraulic steering needs a pump matched to the steering cylinder.
What sensors does the autopilot need?
At minimum, a heading sensor and usually a rudder feedback unit. To steer to wind you also need a masthead wind sensor, and speed data helps the pilot respond correctly. See our B&G instruments for sensors.
How much power will the autopilot use?
It varies a lot with conditions. A pilot working hard in big seas draws far more than one holding course in flat water. Size the drive's power wiring for low voltage drop over the full run and make sure your battery bank can carry the load on long passages.
