Should I choose PWM or MPPT?

PWM controllers are simpler and cost less, and work fine when panel voltage is well matched to the battery. MPPT controllers convert extra panel voltage into more charging current, so they harvest more energy, especially with higher-voltage panels, in cold weather, or on larger arrays. On most boats with more than a small panel, MPPT is worth it.

How do I size a solar charge controller?

The controller's current rating has to cover what the array can push into the battery. For MPPT, also make sure the panels' open-circuit voltage stays below the controller's maximum input voltage, including on cold days when panel voltage rises. Where should the controller be installed?

Mount it close to the batteries in a dry, ventilated spot, and keep the wire between controller and battery short and heavy enough to limit voltage drop. Fuse that battery lead near the battery.
