What does a BatteryProtect do?
A BatteryProtect is a DC load disconnect. It cuts power to the loads wired through it when battery voltage falls too low, so the bank isn't drained to the point of damage. On lithium systems it's often used as the switch the battery management system (BMS) controls to shut off loads.
Does a lithium battery need a battery management system?
Yes. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells must be protected from overcharge, over-discharge, and charging below freezing. A BMS, either built into the battery or external, watches the cells and has to be able to stop charging and stop discharging when limits are reached. What is the Smart Battery Sense for?
It's a small wireless sensor that mounts on the battery and measures its voltage and temperature. It shares that data over Bluetooth with compatible Victron Smart chargers and solar charge controllers, so they charge based on the actual battery voltage and temperature rather than readings at the charger.
