Xantrex Monitors & Remote Panels FAQ
Why use a battery monitor instead of just a voltmeter?
Voltage only gives a rough idea of charge, and it shifts with load and temperature. A shunt-based monitor like the LinkPRO or LinkLITE counts the current going in and out of the bank, so it can show state of charge and how long you have left at the current draw.
Where does the shunt get installed?
The shunt goes in the battery negative, between the bank and every load and charging source. Anything wired straight to the battery negative bypasses the shunt and won't be counted. Land the other negatives on a common busbar, such as our busbars & connectors.
Does a battery monitor need setup after install?
Yes. You'll need to enter the bank's capacity and battery type so the state-of-charge reading means something. It's also good practice to let the monitor sync at a full charge from time to time so its count stays accurate.
