Can I use automotive or hardware store wire on my boat?
It's a bad idea. Household wire is often solid-core, which can crack from vibration, and most automotive wire is untinned copper that corrodes in salt air. Marine primary wire is finely stranded and tinned to stand up to both.
Should I run single wires or a jacketed cable?
Single-conductor primary wire works well inside bundles and panels where it's protected. Where a pair runs through lockers, the bilge, or other exposed spots, a jacketed duplex or multi-conductor cable gives the conductors more protection and a neater run.
