The Importance of Battery Monitoring and Management
A battery management system collects much of the same information as a battery monitor. However, instead of displaying the data, the BMS uses it to optimize the performance and health of each battery. The BMS is the control center for each battery, not the system as a whole.
The main function of a BMS is to prevent overcharging and over-discharging, which can damage a battery and shorten its lifespan. The system calculates the remaining charge, watches the battery’s temperature, checks for loose connections and internal shorts, and balances the charge across all the battery cells. If the BMS detects unsafe conditions, it shuts the battery down to protect the lithium-ion cells and the user.
Battery Monitoring from Victron Energy
The Battery Monitor Victron range consists of products with BMV-7 in the model name. This BMV range is a group of high-precision battery monitors. Their essential function is to calculate ampere-hours consumed and the battery’s state of charge. Think of these monitors as your battery ‘fuel gauge,’ with a timing indicator and much more.
Each model comes with a square bezel overlay, a securing ring for rear mounting, and screws for front mounting. Any model can be mounted in a panel of your choice with a 2.0-inch aperture or in one of Victron’s optional wall enclosures.
Integrated Smart Technology
If you prefer Victron Smart Technology and GX device connectivity, opt for the BMV-712 Smart. This model is the latest evolution of the ever-popular BMV range of battery monitors. It has the same functionality as the earlier BMV-702 but with the extra benefit of integrated Victron Smart technology, which uses Bluetooth and provides wireless communication between various products.
Victron Smart technology simplifies system setup, monitoring, and firmware updates using the free VictronConnect app. This product also features a second input that can be programmed to measure the voltage (of a second battery), battery temperature, or midpoint voltage.
