The American Boat & Yacht Council is a non-profit in charge of managing the development of manufacturing standards for boats in terms of design, building, upkeep, and repair. In addition to creating these industry standards, ABYC contributes to the creation of voluntary international safety recommendations commonly implemented in the United States and many other countries. Today, certifications and boat inspections must follow ABYC standards. Keep reading to learn more about ABYC and why certification is essential.
What Does the ABYC Do?
Both nationally and internationally, ABYC is the acknowledged authority that provides uniform standards to enhance marine manufacturing, maintenance, service, and safety. In addition to setting technical standards for the marine industry, ABYC has become a leader in education for maritime industry professionals, technicians, and boat owners by offering workshops and marine technician certification training programs.
ABYC Certification
ABYC trains and certifies marine technicians and engineers. With each program, a trainee can take a course or self-study, followed by an exam. This allows for flexibility based on the availability and requirements of the manufacturer. There are also two forms of certification designations: advisor and technician. The advisor designation is intended for those who do not physically work on boats, while the technician designation focuses on installation, repair, and troubleshooting. All certifications are valid for five years, after which there is a recertification program in the form of an exam.
Why You Should Hire ABYC Certified Technicians
Hiring an ABYC Certified Technician means you know you’ll be getting high-quality service. You could be wasting time and money or even risking further damage to your boat if the work is not being done according to ABYC Standards. Industry professionals and consumers throughout the country and internationally recognize ABYC standards and certification. There are many benefits to building a boat to these standards, including greater owner safety and liability protection for the manufacturer.
The ABYC standards are also so extensive that they cover most boat manufacturing requirements implemented by many other countries. ABYC-certified technicians are trained to understand these standards and to ensure that the work they perform, whether design, repair, or installation, follows these standards. With advanced technical training comes more efficient work products and higher customer satisfaction.
