No matter the type or size of your boat, it is important to prepare it for winter weather to ensure it remains in good condition. If you are winterizing your boat, be sure to perform sufficient maintenance to protect your boat from moisture, freezing, or corrosion damage. Keep reading to learn more.
Clean Your Boat
If you are storing your boat for the season, it is a good idea to give it a thorough cleaning before putting it away. Not only will you be able to reduce your workload in the spring by preventing issues such as mold and pests ahead of time, but you’ll also be able to get back on the water faster. Clean the decks and be sure that all scuppers are clear of any debris. When selecting boat cleaning products, pick something non-toxic that is safer for the marine environment. You don’t want to release toxic chemicals into the bay or ocean.
Change the Oil
Your boat’s engine also needs maintenance, so make sure you take care of it before storing your boat away for the upcoming winter months. The engine needs to be protected against water and acid substances because they can corrode your engine once they get in there. To prevent this damage, you must change the engine oil and the filters. Be sure to drain any standing water from the engine and check all belts and hoses.
Take Care of Your Marine Batteries
Maintaining your boat’s batteries is essential for their longevity. At the end of the season, remove batteries for storage, clean top surfaces, coat the bolts with corrosion inhibitors, and store the batteries in a dry, cool area. You can either put them on a trickle charger or leave them unplugged and fully charge them once per month. If you need to replace the batteries, be sure to recycle the old ones properly.
Prepare for Freezing Temperatures
Once you remove all the water out of your boat’s freshwater system, be sure to run antifreeze through the pumps and hoses. Make sure you use the proper, non-toxic antifreeze. This will prevent any moisture from seeping into the pumps and damaging your boat. If you have any old antifreeze, be sure to check with your marina for where to recycle it.
